The news at present is doom and gloom...from the money markets...via global warming...to yet another act of violence.
I'm caught with the first of these, trying to sell a house when there's hardly any money around, and people just don't want to take the chance and find it's depreciated in value, just because the market says so...and shareholders are warned..."shares can go down as well as up!"...buyer beware!
Another student takes a gun to school and shoots fellow students. This time in Finland. And knife crime is hitting the headlines here on a regular basis. I can remember similar when I was at school, but it seems now to be a running theme. Those who know me will know I'm a football fan, and go regularly to matches...and one of the victims was a young fellow supporter. Several years ago my team...Charlton Athletic...initiated the "Kick Racism Out of Sport" campaign, which has been taken up worldwide, now they've brought another initiative to the fore - "Street Violence Ruins Lives" (you'll find the link on my Special Places page.
Whatever our views of football(soccer), it is a popular sport, and has a powerful following in most countries...and initiatives like this, if they stop one person carrying a weapon, then that's a good start... I know that Charlton have worked with local communities for years, going into schools, youth clubs...working with young offenders, and older ones...they give training and a purpose, a reason to like your neighbour. As supporters we've never had a particularly offensive reputation, though I'm sure a couple of other clubs supporters might disagree, but we haven't, and that's a fact. I know also that most other clubs have a community based initiative...I'm just letting you see ours.
Okay, now that's the news feed over. I hope you didn't mind.
I've been thinking of moving all my beads to Etsy...it seems easier for all concerned to have them in one place. I have left selling on Ebay now, their new charging structure just wasn't going to work for someone as small as me...in the listing sense, and I might put those listed here on there, and then just leave a gallery here, and sell the jewellery. I think that makes more sense. I'm gradually getting to know my way around the nuances of Etsy...though I would like to see £'s...$ I can work with...
It's strange when you start something new...putting things in your shop for the first time...that, will someone like them? Will they buy? You check the viewing lists...and the number rolls upwards, and then your first sale there. You wrap it carefully, send it out into the world...and wait!! Feedback comes in the shape of compliments...and a relief falls over you, a sense of achievement, and then you can't wait to get the next made and listed. You get to know your regular customers, and gradually those that "loves" you grows...exciting days. I've also invested in a new business card, and pleased with them is an understatement! I just love their tactile feel...all silky!
What else? I am thinking of moving this to Blogger...but that's another times project...
Good morning...though I'm having doubts about that.
It is a gloriously sunny morning, it is a Sunday...a lazy day, as my husband is proving to me! But, I'm in the throes of a bad throat and cold, so if I don't speak too loudly, I'm sorry...and having made it to the football yesterday, we lost...having gone into the lead...we lost! I won't say more on the subject....not until I've seen the penalty decision!
I've been delving into the family history, or rather families. I started looking into my family history years ago, but came to a halt when children intervened, then passed it on to a cousin...but we don't seem to have got very far. So, now with a little time, I'm back to doing that, but at the same time, I've started looking into my husbands family tree. Like all families both have their stories, legends which have grown up, and sometimes you have to burst those, sometimes you find new ones...but, it's fascinating finding people. My great grandmother was German, and that's all my mum knew...never knew where she came from or what, but via the census' I've discovered her village of birth, and she was born in Prussia. Now, I'll have to learn German when I get further along that line. My mother in law, we've now discovered, has a large family somewhere, she always thought of herself as being one. I'm hoping to discover more...so, if your name is English...and your family is from Suffolk...you know where I am!!
If you're interested in discovering your family, I've added a link to my "Special Places" page to the Federation of Family History Societies. I hope it helps...
On the bead front, I've added some new designs to my Etsy shop, and I've been trying some further new designs...larger than spacers, plain colours, but with a twist. I hope you'll like those, when I get some sets completed...
With the jewellery. My commissions are coming along, and thank you... I'm also experimenting with some icons, to wear with ribbons...and completing a range of sparkling necklaces and bracelets, ready for the Christmas season...
I did get to the torch yesterday, not that I got much made, but I did remember how to shape a bead, and got a few sets finished.
Sitting here drinking the second cup of tea of the morning, I read through some of my favourite blogs, catch up on emails, and do some research. My ultimate favourite is The Hermitage, a fantasmagorical way of story telling by Rima Staines...she always has something interesting, but fun to tell us, be it what she's up to, or something she's seen...hopes...and reading about her eclectic collection of snippets and postcards made me think of our journey to Northumberland last week. A week of Roman ruins, castles, sand and moors. It's a county I will return to, it's beautiful, and has everything, with lots of inspiration.
The view of Lindisfarne from Bamburgh
Belsay Hall Garden
A smudged view of inspiration...I do love the combination of effects on this trunk, and I didn't make a note of what variety of tree it was...we'll just have to return to find out!
It's been a bit of a whirlwind this week, and not quite how I'd planned it, but I've been able to get most of what I wanted to do, done...and yes, I have given up work...
Wait a mo...postman...and then a phone call...
I've revived my Etsy shop, and there are beads sitting in there waiting for the world to see, and it appears a little of the world has found them. Here's the link...
I've also discovered Flickr...I know it's been there forever, but now I've had time to load some photos...and the next job is to discover how it all works! I'm on there as Eithne Glass, do visit. Hopefully I'll get it to link with things soon.
I'm off visiting my sister this weekend, we're researching the ancestry, and there's a fair, exhibition of local organisations to her, so...I'm hoping for a nice dinner, as she's a chef! ;) And then next week, a visit to friends, and a mentor...it's been awhile since I visited...it'll be nice to see them again.
Other than that, I best go and make some beads...it's been so long since I lit my torch, I think it might have forgotten how.
You know how when you're looking for something, you find something else which you think is terrific, but at that moment it isn't really what you're looking for, so you store it away for later? I did that several months ago, and now...I've gone back and am so glad I have. I'd found an artist on Etsy who makes randomness, such lovely randomness. Altered images for alternate art amongst other things, which is how I found her...www.etsy.com/profile.php?user_id=5272622, just follow the link and she'll explain who she is. :) I'm now eagerly waiting for the postman to drop a parcel into me, then I'll share some photos too!
It seems strange to think that in less than four weeks, there'll be no journey to work, not unless you count climbing the stairs, and I'll be dividing my day between different arts. It's been a time in coming to that decision, but we've done it. Do I get all sloppy here and go...mwehs to my husband for supporting my ideas? Why not, there's not enough mwehs around in the world...so, mwehs! :)
And back to the beads...I've been catching up with my little spacers this morning, and soon they'll just be listed here and a few on Etsy, with other items... There are a few experiments too in the kiln, which I'm itching to see, maybe another hour will see them out and looked at....if I last that long!! Remind me, I need some top up of certain colours...
I had my grandsons here yesterday. We chose colours and I made some bracelets and necklaces for sales coming along, after we'd played with the micro machines, of course!! So, you can blame them!! What a wet day it was, but in a few minutes break in the clouds, we walked to the local footbridge, and found a hedgehog walking along the grassy verge, sniffing the air and you could almost see it listening for us, so staying quiet, we allowed it on its way...then watched the water trickle under the bridge...they love doing that, I think it's the freedom of hardly any traffic.
It's also my sisters wedding anniversary today, she's off holidaying at present...but Happy Anniversary...for when you get back.
The first day of over a week off!!! Whooppeee....but that's not my main whooppeee...I'm hoping one will be next week, and the other is the end of the month. (More details then!)
I don't know about anyone else, but whoooo....what heat!! I like my weather cool, must be something to do with the ancestry, but, give me cool weather any day. I like sunshine, and I ping into freckle mode at the sight of it, but for living, I need a breeze, preferably a soft and salty one, but one over the last few days would've been fair!! I work in the mornings, so by the time I get home to make, it's been sweltering and all I've wanted to do is sleep...though I have made some jewellery for a couple of fairs coming along, so not completely wasted time.
Life definitely has been a bit of a whirl since my last post...but, that's another story.
I've also been researching the family tree, and when not doing mine, I've been sorting my husbands...I think now we're actually getting somewhere. It was blanks for a considerable time. I suppose when it's your own family, you grow up knowing strange little stories, little hints, but when it's someone elses....you have their stories, and they're not always right. Neither are your own, but you've usually filtered them out by the time you're older. My husband's family come from central London, Durham, and south London, now we've found them in Suffolk and Norfolk. My family come from the East End, the City, Norfolk and Kent...now we've found them in Derbyshire too. If anyone ever gets chance, or finds time...it's fascinating, and I recommend it.
My speil about sport in the last post...lol Yup, I did say we'd draw the first test, seems we gave the second to SA, and will Freddie win this one?! The Open has been won, and back to back with last year sees Padraig Harrington win. The Tour de France was won by a Spaniard...and another Spaniard could be tennis' number one by the end of the week....a very Spanish summer, with their footie win too. And yes, my football season starts next weeks Saturday, first home game against Swansea...how is it we get the newly promoted teams who will be putting their all into the game!
Anyway, as it's slightly cooler, and it's holiday, I'm off to make some beads...
....I'm slowly going off husbands, that's other peoples ones... You can have a decent, intelligent conversation with a wife, but when the husband comes into the equation...the wife disappears into the background of the conversation. Why is it my house I could sell to many women, but the husband...wants to live AT the station, NEEDS to extend a house with an extension and planning permission anyway.
Sorry guys, I know it's only some husbands, and wives are just the same really. ;) If I had a cat, the RSPCA would be after me, so I'll aim at a Chelsea steward instead.
I've been kicking my heels with bead making too...I've run to the bottom of my gas bottle, and have sourced a new supplier, but his deliveries are tomorrow, so it's been a time of fiddling and research, something that needed time to do, and is now done... The rest of this week looks fun too...my colleagues at work are "not working", Wednesday and Thursday, so the office is mine, and mine alone...I think a good book will be necessary, or how long can I stretch a DSE Assessment, time-wise?
What else? My football team has been selling, and another striker (or two) exits. Reading other fans blogs makes me smile though, and the chat ones, now they're downright funny, speculation is rife...and everyone has more experience than the whole of the coaching and management team. Though, sometimes I think we probably have!
We look as though we're going to be drawing the first Test match, the Olympics start in under a month...the US Open tennis is at the end of next month, The Open starts this week...the Ryder Cup is after that...the Tour de France is now, Cowes week...the festival season is in full swing, garden concerts abound in our stately (and not so stately) house gardens. Oh! our Summer months of beautiful sunshine and long days....make the most of it...Christmas cards will be entering the shops next month...
And if it rains today, I'll let you blame me...I cleaned my windows today..
I knew there was something else today...it's Bastille Day... A celebration of the storming of the Bastille Prison in Paris, two hundred and nineteen years ago. So why are there celebrations in New York...and a festival in Seattle? Maybe the ten days since the 4 July is too long without a reason to party! ;) I promise...the celebrations are real.
A lot longer than originally planned, but a start to my customers gallery...unfortunately my laptop was not playing fair, and that's where some of my photos are held, but it's coming together, and the page is now visible...at least!
I'm hoping the bug I've picked up from somewhere will decide to take itself off elsewhere soon. I've had it hanging around for quite sometime, it feels as though it's breaking and then just ends up as aches, and sleeping, abates for a little and then back again...let me just have the danged cold, get it over with and on with working properly.
Just heard some banging and flapping in my hall... I have a family of robins nesting in the garden, and one of the adults visits my kitchen...now one of the babies keeps coming in, and not getting out the same door, finding its way to the hall, and then gets stuck. I keep getting worried it'll scare itself too much, but so far between the robin and I, we've managed to let it out via the windows with no real ill effect... It might learn to exit via the door soon... I also have a very shaggy looking front hedge...sparrows nesting there!!
We took our grandsons...(yes, I have two) to the Bure Valley Railway(Aylsham to Wroxham in Norfolk) and Broads boat trip on Saturday. We got a little wet with the rain, though had fun...some of those houses are gorgeous, but I wonder about keeping your feet dry, the waters so high. Lots of birds...and things to see. I think a day boat on your own would be more fun, with stops where you wanted, and you could go further afield, but it's a good introduction, and the train is cute!
It had got to a point where I was embarrassed when someone bought and paid for something, and neither the site nor Paypal let me know what... I'm hoping the new shopping cart will help me and my customers with that issue, and make our lives simpler. I apologise to those who have been caught up with that.
Like I said...almost finished. There are a couple of new pages to be added, and these will be finished and displayed over the next week...
I've had fun today...a visit to the Newmarket Bead Fair, catching up with old friends, both from within the beading world, and my "other" life...non beads!! Though I discovered even this world has leaked into the world of beads, and I wish the new recruit well. Some new items were purchased from Martin Tuffnell, and it was nice to find out about the plans for the next Flame Off, and his new venture...I know all will succeed, both he and Teresa have boundless enthusiasm and energy... I also caught up with Jo Rohrer, who I haven't seen in an age. It was great to hear how well, and how much she'd enjoyed the Surrey Artists Open Studios events. Maybe I shouldn't admit it here, but I did love her colours and work...
I'm also planning a big step...and am so excited by it.
1 June! Now where did I put that first five months!
If you've got this far you've discovered we're in the throes of a ravamp. It's been on the cards for a few weeks now, and with time this week, I've finally got to it. There was only one real decision to make and that was the overall colour...choices...pink, turquoise and green, but I wanted a fresh look after the red and dark grey, and the green won out. I hope you approve. I haven't quite finished editing everything, so you'll find odd patches of red and large text still, but it'll gradually vanish, and some new items will appear over the next couple of weeks.
Maybe it was the thought of summer arriving soon...but, I'm pleased with the effect. Light and airy...
Well, it's past my bedtime, and I've been working on this for awhile, so I'll say goodnight...sweet dreams, and don't let the bedbugs bite! ;)
It seems a long time to go to August, and the bank holiday end of it too, but I've booked a week away to Northumberland. A lodge to an estate with it's own river and woodland for walking, plus sandy beaches not far...and the lane leads to Hadrian's Wall, and the National Park further across...so I'm sure there'll be inspiration in the area. It's an area I've never been to before, either driving through it to get to Scotland, or not getting that far, and staying south of it. Believe me when I say...I can't wait!!!
Closer to home, and at the present, I've been researching some colour combinations...some work, and some...are best not talked about! You think they'll go...and very often do in other fabrics, but heat, glass and these colours...nope, it's best left on the shelf!
I've listed some new beads, and jewellery...and working on a bracelet for myself. I don't often make myself things, but this one is all blues and silver charms. Beaded charm bracelets is where I started, making one for my daughter in law as a present, and then it progressed.
I know what my tastes are, but it's gauging others tastes and needs that makes a good business, and you just have to have that leap of faith, not just a good idea...but an idea that can grow and evolve, and see in anything a design, a spark of inspiration, from the mottled back of a tabby cat, to the high design and colour of Moorish tiles, the lights in the sky to the dark of the depths, long sandy beaches, to the yellow of New York cabs. The world is inspiration! I can't get all high brow about art, it's what you love, not what it costs, or someone says it is...love a piece because you do...it's simple really.
I'm having a little tussle with myself...fruity juices, and natural gems... ;)
A busy week...but I wish you all a wonderful renewal of the year. Spring Equinox...a time I can never forget, as my sister was born on that day in her year. We were born in opposite Equinox...she's Vernal and I'm Autumnal. She always is a livewire! ;)
You'll find a link to a brilliant lady...an artist, a teller of tales...on my special places page. View her drawings, and follow her to her blog. You won't be disappointed. You'll discover her at The Hermitage.
I've been diverted from making beads for a week, but my area is now tidy, and glass in put away...so at least I can now see what colours are there, but I got back into harness today...and I realised how much I missed it. And I've listed some new beads, which I hope you like...
And now I've been disturbed, so I'd better finish cooking dinner.... :)
Wow! It's been busy at work...and it's nice to say, busy at home too. :)
Lots of parcels winging their way out, and some winging their way in too. A couple of new books were delivered today, and I aim to snuggle up with those later..though maybe they'll have to be left until after I collect my new glasses tomorrow.
I'm pleased with what I'm discovering, and it's interesting seeing what colours, and makes of glass work with others, even with the same heat tolerances they don't always like each other...
I've been thinking a visit to Venice would be nice, but whether that comes off...who knows...in the meantime, a visit to Norfolk comes first. ;)
I'm having fun with my "little and often" making. Getting used to having things at home, it's been a strange week, but fun. I, at last got all my glass out of the boxes I brought them home in, though they're spread all over a bed cover...I still need to collect my tubes for them....
I did some experimenting yesterday with some shapes, just freeform...and though they look okay, I don't think they'd be strong enough for sale...in fact, I know they wouldn't survive, but it's all about learning. I have ideas whizzing around my head...I've definitely caught the bug...lol
I've had an exciting day...first my youngest son arrived with card and champagne, which is kind of apt today, but will wait patiently for an up-coming special occasion. And then the eldest son, with youngest grandson arrived...with card and forty beautiful roses, of apricot, lemon and a cream with apricot edge...gorgeous! Roses are a family favourite, my Dad used to grow them...so always a soft spot for them...and forty of them!! I think I see some beads to match arriving soon. :)
The other excitement...I'm all set up for making beads at home now!! My kiln came home on Friday, and torch, gas and oxygen yesterday, so today...all got set up and worked first time!! So, my first beads, made in my own space, are made and patiently cooling at present. Just a few spacers and single coloured lampworks...glass I know well, to see how they react with kiln temperature and such...if they've worked, you might get a view. :)
It seemed so strange...and weird at first, but I got there...I mean, I have a window to look out of, and no one to chat to whilst making... And my husband commented, that if he hears whirring noises in the night, he'll know where to find me! ;)
I would really like to say a special thank you for their patience and help...Rob and Yvonne Johnson...they've had me camping in the corner of their studio for about a year...thank you, guys! :) The biscuits yesterday were lovely. I am going to miss the stories and friendly faces, but I will be visiting...on occasion.
My kiln is ordered...at last! I'm leaving my landlord behind, and spreading out in my own workshop. (I think I hear a sigh of relief... ;) ), and I do thank them for putting up with me for so long. I started bringing my bits home yesterday, and will have the kiln here by Friday, and then the rest next week. I go all tingly at the thought...I can now wake in the middle of the night with a thought and go and try it! lol I really can't wait to broaden my knowledge and practice different techniques. Time always limited that before, now I can try all sorts!
Other than that, I did get some beadmaking done, not much, but some, and I made myself some beads for my jewellery.
Again, so long since I've written. Between working, travelling and making...it doesn't leave much time for writing here, but I must do better!
I've had a complete day to myself today. I sent the parcels I had to, and then browsed some items for a commissioned necklace, and some for beadmaking. Tomorrow is a making day, that means travelling too at present, but soon I will be set up properly at home and will be able to make beads whenever I want, and not just twice a week, as at present. I want to widen my knowledge, though as in all hand crafts you're always learning, and never stop. Trial and error, and happy mistakes...it's a good way to learn.
With the view of working in my own space, I've been gathering more glass and tools together, and have these sitting waiting patiently for me! I know I'm not waiting patiently to try them out! I can't wait... My "landlord" has been more than patient with me, taking up space in his studio, and I thank him for that...though, I think he might miss the tea maker twice a week!
I'm also delighted in some of my more recent beads...definite improvement on my early attempts!
Oh my!! I've sadly neglected this space for far too long. Reasons? Excuses? Maybe a little of both coming.
We've been trying to sell our house, and we're still sitting here. We have sold it three times, but our first buyer (twice) pulled out, and our second one, wanted us to move inside two weeks. At the time, a feat too far. So, we're starting from scratch and look on each weekend as a new opportunity.
Jewellery, I've got a couple of plans "up my sleeve", and designs are coming along. I just need time for everything, and the sooner I can make this my full-time work, the happier I'll be.
Bead-making, now there's something that is spinning...you get to meet wonderful people. I've begun to sell via eBay, and you'll find a link elsewhere on this site, eventually I want to sell here too, but at present there's just not enough days in the week, or hours in a day. Especially as I have to drive to a studio space, and it's not just down the road. Unfortunately, the increases in petrol is making it harder and harder. The want to move is making it more complicated at present, but ultimately, will be easier.
Is that enough excuses and reasons for neglect? ;) Maybe not...
My problem is, I know what I want to do, and where I want to do it....and for what reasons. Just at present, it seems that things are conspiring to thwart that wish. And strangely, they coincide with my husbands want and wishes too...strange how life likes circles. :)
And another circle...delving into my family history, I have a great...great grandfather who came from Norfolk, which is where I want to live....maybe it's a draw of "going home" for this city girl.
I know...it's way too early for thinking about the season of goodwill yet! But, as a designer I have to...in fact, I started about three months ago, and if you would like something for that special person in your life! Or anyone else, then now is the time to think and talk about it. :)
I promise I won't speak about Easter until later! ;)
Just a quick message. I've added a new page to my shop, showing silver chain necklaces, featuring a silver charm, lampwork beads and Swarovski crystals. There are two at present and I hope you like them. More will follow, also bracelets to complement the necklaces.
Agh! It's been too long since I've written here. I do visit and check emails every day, but time has escaped me to write.
My apologies to all...just put it down to trying to fit too much in to too little time!
At present I'm trying to arrange a house move, which nearly didn't happen two weeks ago, but is now all back and together. Starting to sell beads. There will be some here after I've moved, but I haven't got time at present to do that from here.
I am still making jewellery, commissioned pieces and parties, which is all good, and that will also be expanded after our move. I have some new silver charms, and will be making some new chains this week. I promise I'll photo them and put them for sale. I've also got some very pretty chain...all tiny hearts.
Some forward warning, I might lose access next week. The ISP is being changed and they haven't promised instant change over...so, if it's silent and you don't get a response, I'm not ignoring you...not this time! ;)
At last!! An afternoon making jewellery again. Having shown the viewers out, I made the room untidy by making a bracelet, some pendant necklaces, a pair of earrings and two chain necklaces.
I am delighted with the way the necklaces turned out. They were a new venture, and similar to some bracelets I started with, and have now begun to return to.
I love the very feminine design and feel of these, while still using handmade lampwork beads, by combining them with crystals, they find that sparkle that all girls love!
Another piece made today was a commissioned bracelet. The brief was dark orange...and I hope this design has found that. Again, combined with Swarovski crystals it gives that loved sparkle effect.
And not least...a pair of earrings for my oldest and closest friend. We've known each other longer than either of us care to remember...but, here we are, still friends... :) You can see Rosie's Limes, on my Jewellery Gallery.
Sorry about that. Between putting the house on the market, and making my own beads, this has been neglected, though not the jewellery making. I've been making commission pieces and thank you for those. Still a couple to get out, which I'll be doing this weekend. So, watch your letter boxes.
Also my MiL is having a party, so it will be great to see everyone there. And thank you to her.
Just to let everyone know, I am still alive. It's been ages since I've updated my blog, but life's been busy.
One son has just sold his house, the other is moving back in with us, as his let has been sold. Anyway, enough of life...
I've actually started using some of my own beads in my designs now. That's quite exciting. They're not all good enough, but they are loads better than when I first started...so, you never know, I might start selling sometime later in the year... ;)
It doesn't do to run before you can walk, and if you want a good reputation for bead making, there's no point in selling wonky, mismatched beads.
I've been experimenting with some new designs, and have made a couple of necklets with a Chinese cord and focal. These are much heavier than some, but give some "wham" to colours and necks.
Ostara, Spring Equinox, Vernal Equinox. This is the first planting festival. The days and nights are now equal and spring arrives to awaken our world.
I also say "Happy Birthday" to my sister. :) I'm glad she liked her present!
Over the last few weeks, I've begun making my own beads. Certainly not for sale to other jewellery designers, but I've been happy with my progression and getting the basic ideas right. I've made a page to show off my development. :) You can follow my progress there. And gradually, I'll start using some of the better ones in my own jewellery.
I've also made a set using copper for the findings and some beads. I'll be photographing it, so it will be ready to view soon! It has gorgeous warm colours...and very celtic.
I've added a new category to my shop. It's "Cords and Ribbons", showing leather thong and ribboned necklaces. It is a new departure for me, but still has the handcrafted beauty of the focals, and pendants. I am more than pleased with the finished results.
I hope you like them as well...
What can you make with some lentil lampworks, coral discs, a few silver beads, and crystals? This...
I love it, and think it's one of the best pieces I've made.
I'd like to say a big "thank you" to everyone that came to my first party. It was lovely to meet everyone, and thank you for a very nice evening.. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
I also hope you learnt a little about beads, and their differences.
A good weekend...and hopefully just the start to a good week.
Yesterday, I tried my hand at making some corded, and ribboned necklaces. They're specifically for a party I'm doing tomorrow, but if they work, then I'll try some more. I'm pleased with how they've turned out, so...keep your eyes peeled.
Today, I went to the London Bead Fair at Kempton Park, and had a good day, even if my husband did try to direct me the wrong way! Lots of things to see, and mull over. Mostly it was seeds, gemstones and tools, but in amongst those were a few lampworkers, including a large stand of Rob Johnson's beads. Such a lot of choice. I picked up some gemstone, and mini freshwater pearl strings. I tend to use those as spacers, and intermediate beads, also some Japanese size 6 seed style beads. Such gorgeous colours. I did miss a ribbon stand, which was at Newmarket...but, they're online, so I'll have to find them that way.
It was great to meet a few friends...unexpectedly. I know, I was pleased to see people again... :)
Phew! A lot of updating today...lots of new designs using a mix of styles. Stunning lampworks, gorgeous natural gems...I hope you love them as much as I do. Whenever I make something new, I want to keep it...I guess, I buy beads that I love and hope you do. I still have some items to photo, but I am beginning to win with the photos...I think!
I have been making pendants using such beautiful lampwork focals. I find it amazing the delicacy of the work that these small works of art show. I can sit and watch the making for hours. If any of you ever get a chance, then find yourself a lampworker, ask nicely and maybe you'll be lucky and they'll share their secret...or at least one of them!
I've still got a couple of different ideas to finish, and hope to get a photo of those into here over the next week, if they work as well as they could...a bit of "watch this space!" lol If they don't arrive, you know they didn't work as hoped.
I'm off to the Kempton Park Bead Fair next Sunday, it's a chance to see what is around, get more ideas of beads and other jewellery making products.
As you can see, it's been a busy time, a new style of site...a greater understanding of what the site will let me do, and some of the things it won't!
Also, a few days of producing some new designs, which I will be placing in my shop over the next few days. I am more than pleased with how they've turned out. Now, all I need to do, is improve my photography! Usually, I'm a snap and go photographer, and that doesn't do justice to the beauty of the beads...I need to work on lighting and macros! Help! lol
A new look for a new year. I am at present trying to develop the design of the overall site. Make it a comfortable, and interesting place to visit.
I am also formulating some new ideas for designs for my jewellery, and I hope to start putting these into practice over this weekend.
I want to expand the watches, add new ear-rings, as well as more distinctive styles in bracelets, necklaces and sets. I have some gorgeous beads just waiting for me to "get my act together", and I have made time this weekend.
A busy time, and a belated thank you to everyone that found me at Clavering Christmas Fair, and those who have made purchases from me, or just contacted me. Your help and encouragement is terrific...and helps keep my enthusiasm high.
It's been a very busy at home. Getting parcels posted, and commissions finished. Sourcing one or two special items. I have been able to purchase some gorgeous focals for the new year, and these will be made into jewellery, ready for sale at my parties....or commission.
I hope to photograph some of these during the holidays, and show them in a separate thread...those that "might" be! :) Just waiting for you.
A bit of a long day, but at least a dental visit at lunchtime, gave me the quiet and light of the afternoon to develop some ideas that had been formulating over the last few days.
I have had two sets of fantastic turquoise encased beads for sometime (see below), I was so excited when they arrived. Then, I spent so much time trying to work out something worthy of the beauty their maker had given them. I didn't want to drown their colour with too much else, or to do them a dis-service. My experimenting started this afternoon, and I can say that I am more than happy with what came to fruition. I used one of the sets that had discs, something that can be difficult to show to their full potential. I hope you agree that this view has done that. I have called them Sparta
. With the sun glittering on my perch overlooking my garden, I made a sparkly piece too, one that had the colours of fuchsia, and light azore running through them. This will sparkle in the lights, or sun. Will bring colour to the neckline, with a lightness of flowers.
Both these items will be going into my shop very soon.
I have been buying some unique sets of beads, and the jewellery made with these will be featuring in my shop over the next few days.
It's amazing how soon Christmas hits the shops. Cards, and decorations are already on show in our High Streets, and slowly people begin to look for that something special. Hopefully some will look here.
Over the last days I've been accumulating display items. I am investigating the possibility of selling at a local craft fair. It would be my first, although I have sold directly for sometime.
I hope you like the updates, and changes I have made to the site. More will follow.
Yesterday I collected some new beads, and having worked hard on other, normal things all day, sat for a bit of quiet. I kept looking at the sets I'd collected, when...gradually an idea formed, something I'd not tried, and didn't know if I could make, or if it'd work if I could. I wasn't even sure if I'd got all the elements, so after some rummaging, I found the silver wire I needed, then designed, and made "Meandering Peach". I'm pleased with the way it's come out, I hope you do.
I still have one set of something different sitting here looking at me, but I think they're aiming a similar way, just maybe with one or two variations! But, I have to order some more silver wire.
You'll find some new items in my gallery, and shop. I feel my designs and knowledge are developing, and my understanding of the innovative developments in beads that lampworkers are producing. I still feel that the beads are the most important element, that you should use their colour, movement and shape to work your design around them. Lampworkers make them beautiful, jewellery makers make them live. We can kill them too.
Time has slipped through my fingers again, and it's been sometime since I've updated this. My only excuse is being busy.
I have recently added some more sets, necklaces, and bracelets. I have other ideas for enlarging my contents, but at present they're for the future.
As strange as it might sound at the end of August, I have seriously got to think of making items with Christmas in mind. Collecting items that represent the Autumn collection colours, discovering what the clothing fashion industry is going to present this year. It seems that greys, topaz, blues, and mahogany colours are favourite, but I can't just stay with those, other people have ideas too, so it's really developing ideas for everyone.
With the above in mind, I'm trying to widen my stock items, those beads I know I will use often. The complements, that enhance the highlight beads.
I have finished one set of commissions, and have the start of another, with some elements still to come. When complete I'll put it in my gallery, and you can judge if I've managed to capture what was required.
My bracelet "Apple Blossom" is a change of design for me, light and delicate, completely feminine. I think it would look stunning as bridesmaid or bridal wear, and could be made using other colours, sizes, and also ear-rings, bracelets and necklaces. It's so light, beads could be exchanged with crystal for an added sparkle, if required. The theme is endless.
I've received some stunning beads from Rob Johnson...and my mind is buzzing with what can be designed with them, so they are the centre of the item, and not swamped by the "extras".
All these beads are handmade individually, with painstaking attention to detail, and to that end my aim is to enhance, to make them into a stunning piece to be worn.
I've just updated my shop, having sold two bracelets this morning, and thank you for your support there. One is a gift for a Mum, and in repeating myself, it's a nice feeling when someone likes something enough to give.
I've also been asked to think about three other commissioned pieces, very special items. So, at present the mind's working overtime, and experiments will follow.
I've now received all the beads I need for a further commissioned piece, which I need to show the buyer, with ideas before I put it together...the photo of the elements will go today.
Yesterday, I made a necklace using some beads which I'd received from a member of a group I belong to, all bronzed and ambered, I hope you like the simplicity of that...again the photo needed to be done in daylight. The camera's poised!!
I really am addicted to Rob's beads! I've some on order, and some more pending...I think his use of colour, and design is stunning. Both, because of their detail, and their simplicity. I hope he thinks of that as a compliment!
I now need to take some photos, and make some bracelets, having concentrated on necklaces, and sets recently.
Thank you for your support, and encouragement again.
Another bracelet sold today, as a present. It's a nice feeling, to know that someone appreciates your work enough to give it as a present to a friend. I also had many compliments about my jewellery today, and tentative sales...
A commission for a cane bracelet, which I made this afternoon when I got home from work. I had the beads already to be able to make that. And some hot pink beads arrived I'd ordered, they're for a special friend to give as a present, to someone special to her. Also, a large parcel of mystery beads, from a member of a beading group I belong to. So many beautiful beads I have to design with now...and a big thank you to her.
Also, I have some ideas I want to try out. They hopefully, will find their way here. I have started making mobile (cell) phone charms, and have an order for two of those already.
I've found as I've been designing, I'm discovering "my" style, what I prefer, letting the beads be my guide, rather than swamping them. I hope you agree...I thought I'd share one item here, show you what one necklace was inspired by.
The blue purple lampworks are Rob's, they have a beautiful pink swirled into them, the photo doesn't do them total justice, and an improved version will be shown in either the gallery, or shop at a later date. The heart pendant is purply pink, an encased flower, and is so delicate, picking up the swirled pink so well. There is a little sterling silver, and the necklace is completed by natural gemstone beads of flourite, these come in natural tones of amethyst, clear, pink and green. I think they are my favourite gemstones.
Gosh, so much time has passed since my last entry.
This last week I took time off work, and went away for a couple of days, so a small excuse.
I've ordered some special beads, and am waiting for those to arrive. The designs are flying around in my mind...it will be good to get them into reality, before I change my mind. :)
Thank you to everyone that has purchased, and commissioned pieces. They are in the process of coming together. Either that, or you've already received them.
I have made several necklaces this week and a bracelet, and will be getting those on here over the next couple of days. I hope you like them. More of Rob's beads, and pink David Christensen's canes, used. I've been trying to stock up on my regular beads, beads that go with all the special lampworks I have at present.
A thank you to my sister, for spreading my site. She's a sweety... ;)
I was asked to take my "box" into work today. I don't like doing it too often, it just seems as though I'm forcing things if I do. But, having been asked to, it was taken. I also took the two commissioned necklaces in.
People were so complimentary about my designs, and colour combinations. It's always nice to hear these, it helps keep you inspired and to know peoples tastes for future ideas.
I had a good morning, selling the necklace "Mint Julep", an aqua, rose and crystal bracelet (which never got a name) and the bracelet "Raspberry Ripple". The buyers were so happy with their purchases, it makes designing and making much easier.
I also had a lot of compliments (which I will pass on) for Rob's beads. Some people thought they were ceramic, and when I explained how they're made, they were even more impressed. lol
Each person liked a different colour, or combination. Keeps the beauty of discovery as I thread an incentive.
If any of you visit....thank you for your purchases, and I hope you enjoy wearing them as much as I enjoyed designing them.
I spent the latter part of the afternoon making a "set". I seem to be drawn to the colour turquoise at present, maybe it's the heat of the day, and a wish that I was dabbling my toes in a bright sea. I think this must have been the inspiration for these. It reminds me of the seas around the Caribbean...just as the sun touches.
A busy few days, unfortunately not at jewellery making. I have made two necklaces, but not enough. For the first I've used Rob's lampworks, a set called "Snake Skin", and his clear etched spacers, with green cats eyes. The colour green dominates the lampworks, and I hope the softness of the spacers echoes the colour...with the cats eyes almost a reflection. It contrasts beautifully. The second is made from rectangle crackle beads of pinky silver and green, which I've spaced with little green cubes, and Swarovski erinite crystals, and silver lined seed beads. It's a very feminine looking piece.
It's been a green week! :)
I have revamped my shop, and I hope by placing the explanations, and history of the items I use, this helps in deciphering the strange language jewellery makers use sometimes. I've also separated necklaces and bracelets, with ear-rings and sets, hopefully coming in the near future.
I've placed another order for toggles, and discovered a site for Balinese silver, that looks excellent. So, not a completely wasted time.
I have some new goodies to form into beautiful things. Gorgeous beads, and useful compliments.
I was lucky, I found a place that was having a "moving" sale, and was able to pick up some additional kind of beads at a low price. Always useful when you're trying to keep prices obtainable, but want to use excellent quality main, and focal beads.
Friday was a strange day. The radio filled with the anniversary of the bombings in London, and the question "can you remember where you were?". Yes, I was baby-sitting, and it was the third Thursday after my father had died suddenly. It wasn't an easy day....it wouldn't have been anyway, but the added heart-ache...but life does continue.
I had to go into a local town, Royston, Herts., and casually looked in a jewellers window there, to see similar bracelets to those I make. My surprise was at the price they were requesting you pay for them. More, than a little higher than I sell for, even if they do have the overheads of a shop front. And I'm allowed to say that, this is my blog! lol
I also ummed and ahhed about a business card, and came to the conclusion that I need something to put with the parcels. To that end, I've bought some really lovely cerisy red card, a lip shaped hole punch, and a black pen. I have a guillotine, and I can write my details on one side, and the details of the piece of jewellery on the other. I hope people like that.
I want to make several pieces today. Some simple, and one a little more extravagant....
two commissions today. A seeded necklace, with crystals and glass focal., and a bracelet and ear-rings to compliment "Humbug", which has been ordered. :)
A satisfying day...
I also have another commission, a present....base colour being red. So, the search is on for some more red...
